There are various theories of his origins. In a family History by Ralph R. Keffer, a descendant, it is claimed he was a son of Michael Keffer and Elizabeth Lachman, (or Elizabeth Backman). However, it doesn't explain why he listed himself as being born in Virginia. Michael lived in Somerset County, PA, and then in Ligonier Twp, Westmoreland County, PA. I think he might be a previously unknown sibling of Jacob Benard Keefer, also of Switzerland Co, Indiana, because all of Jacob's younger siblings were born in Virginia.
